Fire Safety in Schools – A Practical Guide for School Leaders
Fire safety is one of the most important aspects of school health and safety. Every school has a legal duty to protect pupils, staff, visitors and contractors from the risk of fire through suitable management arrangements, regular maintenance and effective emergency procedures.
Fire Risk Assessments
Every school must have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment carried out by a competent person. The assessment identifies fire hazards, people at risk and the measures needed to reduce those risks. It should be reviewed regularly and whenever significant changes occur, such as building alterations or changes in how areas are used.
Fire Door Inspections
Fire doors play a critical role in protecting escape routes by slowing the spread of smoke and fire. Schools should routinely inspect fire doors to ensure they close correctly, are not damaged and have not been wedged open or altered.
Fire Alarm Testing
Fire alarm systems should be tested weekly using a different call point each time. Schools should maintain accurate records of all testing, servicing and any faults identified. Staff should also know what to do if the fire alarm system becomes unavailable.
Emergency Lighting
Emergency lighting should be tested monthly with a full duration test carried out annually by a competent engineer. Escape routes should always remain adequately illuminated during an emergency.
Fire Drills
Fire drills should normally be carried out at least once each term and whenever significant changes are made to evacuation arrangements. Schools should record evacuation times, identify lessons learned and ensure any issues are addressed promptly.
Good Fire Safety is About More Than Compliance
Effective fire safety is not simply about meeting legal requirements. It provides confidence that pupils and staff can evacuate safely and that the school is prepared to respond effectively in an emergency.
How SchoolSafe Systems Helps
SchoolSafe Systems supports schools through independent fire safety reviews, fire risk assessment action tracking, compliance monitoring and practical advice to help schools maintain effective fire safety arrangements throughout the year.
